A 4-night stay allows you to experience the Kalahari at your own pace. Tswalu’s guarantee of a private vehicle, guide and tracker provides complete freedom to explore South Africa’s biggest privately owned reserve. The wide, open spaces, so typical of the southern Kalahari’s dramatic beauty, await exploration both on and off the vehicle. Actively tracking iconic Kalahari species, like a pride of black-maned lions or a brown hyena, adds to the interactive thrill of game viewing, as do sightings of elusive creatures, like pangolin and aardvark. With the opening of Restaurant Klein JAN, in collaboration with Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, the culinary traditions and ingredients of the Northern Cape have become the unexpected heroes of an imaginative menu deeply rooted in this under-explored region. By choosing Tswalu, guests not only become part of a bigger sustainability story but contribute towards the conservation of the southern Kalahari’s biodiversity.

About the Motse

As South Africa’s biggest privately owned game reserve, Tswalu has an extremely low ratio of guests to space. This low-impact approach to ecotourism means that you’ll be one of no more than 28 guests with exclusive access to one of southern Africa’s last great wildernesses. At the foot of the Korannaberg mountains, the Motse is a luxury, contemporary camp with nine private guest legae, the Tswana word for ‘home’. The entire camp, including the main lodge’s indoor and outdoor lounge and dining areas, echoes the Kalahari’s dramatic beauty with richly textured interiors in soothing nature-inspired tones. The Motse welcomes children of all ages, and families are accommodated in one of three two-bedroom legae with a central living room. Inspiring adventure while soothing the senses, the Motse is your home from home – comfortably luxurious, yet comfortingly familiar.

Amazing Kalahari

It was the most luxurious and relaxing experience but we also learned so much about the Kalahari and about the area and it was truly just the most special experience.

Beyond Expectation

It is hard to even begin to do Tswalu justice with my words. Without a doubt, Tswalu is a magical experience on every level: Scenery, animals, accommodations, cuisine, service and, last but so not least, the people. I have never met more gracious, lovely and kind people in all of my travels. They are what bring all the other elements together and create an experience that is nothing short of once-in-a-lifetime and unforgettable.

Stunning place!

Everything about Tswalu was incredible: from the setting and scenery you drive through to get to the lodge (we stayed at Tarkuni House), to the warm welcome from the super attentive staff, to the game drives and wildlife... just beautiful.
We had dinner at Klein Jan the first night, which was just stunning in every aspect - a proper journey from start to finish.
Everything and everyone was top notch and made our three days there some of the most memorable I've had.
I highly recommend the hike up to see the old carvings - super interesting and the view is breathtaking. Also, not to be missed are the meerkats and the stars at night. Mind blowing!
Thank you for a wonderful wonderful stay!
